Love my new camera!!

I am not a photographer and I don't claim to be by any stretch of the imagination.  I have not yet gotten around to even glancing at my camera's manual and all I do is put it in Auto when I want to take photos (although I considered myself savvy when I thought to turn off the flash since we were outside ;)).  These photos I took this afternoon are straight out of my camera; I don't know how to do any fancy photoshop work, which is too bad because I'm sure I could make them look brilliant.  However, I am so overjoyed to have these images, whether they are touched up or not.  My old point and shoot never would have captured these moments and I would have been left in frustration with some very blurry shots of my kids' shoulders as they scurried away faster than I could snap a photo.

The best of the rest...

I always end up uploading more photos than I can use for the blog and some just don't fit into the stories I tell.  So here are some of the best of the rest of the photos from this weekend.

I was lucky to get this photo of Serena in her Minnie costume.  She LOVES Minnie, but she wouldn't let me take her photo.  She was actually turning around but I snapped it too quick for her.  That is one reason I love my new camera; I can take photos so much faster!
 Taking a bath!
Jameson wanted to help Serena wash her hair...how cute is that?!
LOVE this photo...my girls look so pretty!

Princess Tea Party

I love The Disney Store!!  I am there at least once or twice a month and I love to clearance shop mostly.  I hardly buy anything full price nowadays.  I got these great Minnie Mouse sweats there for $5 each and a hoodie Minnie jacket for Serena for $10.  And not to be left out, Jameson got a pair of Mickey Mouse (playing hockey) pjs for $5.  I also discovered the Disney outlet last weekend on my trip up to Austin and OH.MY.GOD, is about all I can say.  The princess dresses were marked down to $16 there.  I almost totally lost it and bought four dress ups, but I limited myself to one per girl (Serena got Minnie and Calli got Belle).  I wanted to get Jasmine, Aurora and Pocahantas too, but I am wondering if it's truly for my kids or if it's just me living vicariously through them and their pretty dresses?!?

I digress.  Where was I?  Oh, I LOVE DISNEY.  Oops, I almost got sidetracked again and started talking about Disneyland and how we can't wait to go someday.  Luckily I brought myself back before I began typing THAT sentence.  So on to our adventures on Saturday.  The Disney Store was having a Princess Tea Party and we were so excited (Richard and Jameson especially!).  Okay, really it was just Calli and me to be totally honest.  Serena does not really love to dress up in public, but I fought her into her Cinderella dress, telling her she could change after the party.  Calli went as Belle and looked beautiful!

We got there for the first session of two and it was way less crowded than I anticipated.  It was really nice actually not having a madhouse of little princesses.  First they got in line to get their crowns.  The lady asked their names and wrote them on the crowns and I was totally surprised when Serena was asked her name and SHE ACTUALLY GAVE IT TO THE LADY.  Of course, I had to tell her that "Sena" was actually "Serena", but I was shocked that Serena volunteered to talk to a stranger.  Watching her yesterday I could really see her starting to come out of her shell just a little.

After the crowns the girls played princess trivia and then got to decorate little teacups with some jewel stickers.  Then they played a game, got some stickers and a coloring page and that was about it.  They had fun and it was free, so what more can you ask for?!

After our adventures at The Disney Store we decided to go for lunch.  I had bought a Groupon for a new restaurant called The Yacht Club.  Actually my friend and I tried to go there for lunch on Tuesday, but they were closed.  They didn't have their hours posted on their window (what business doesn't have hours posted?!?!) and a search of their website from my iPhone said that, yes indeed they should have been open.  My friend went next door to ask and was told that they just started being closed on Tuesdays due to slow business.  Hi, if you are going to be closed, post your hours.  We weren't the only ones there wondering what was up.  The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth, but I had that Groupon and the place has a huge play area outside so we just had to try it out.

The food was nothing to write home about, but it was eatable.  The thing I actually care about is my kids being happy.  As long as there is something to play with I can eat bad food.  We go to a few restaurants that aren't the best in town, but they have play areas and I can eat without my kids being in my face.  The Yacht Club has two big Rainbox Play systems on astroturf (it's the greenest thing you will see in San Antonio!!) and a sandbox.  My only real complaint is the location.  I realize for some crazy reason this city is built around it's freeways and EVERYTHING is located ON the freeway (don't even get me started), but this place just felt especially close.  It wasn't as peaceful and it was quite loud with the cars rushing by on the freeway, but that's just the way things are here.  All in all, we'll probably go back before the hot weather hits.  This is not a good place to go in the summer, as the whole play area/outside eating is not shaded at all and the sun just beats down on you.  Actually Richard has been complaining all day of a sunburn from yesterday's 60 degree weather, so we definitely won't be back when the temperatures rise ;).

All in all, very very fun morning/afternoon!

The girls walking into the mall on the way to The Disney Store
Waiting for the party to start

Waiting in line for their crowns

 Sharing tea with her sister

Playing princess trivia.  Serena never actually knew the answers, but I was happy to see her just raising her hand and getting involved!  So unSerena.
 The perfect princess moment
The boys had SO MUCH FUN
 The girls with their cups
Playing the sugar cube game (they had to get the sugar cubes from one cup to the other carrying them on their spoons)

This would have been a cute photo if Calli's eyes were open.  She loved all the play equipment at the restaurant.
Playing in the sandbox.  That kid Jameson is looking at started throwing sand on him while I was taking a photo.  I would be horrified to see my child throwing sand on anyone, much less a one-year-old, but I'm assuming the parents didn't see.  Wouldn't surprise me thought if they just didn't care.

Girls Night Out!!

I have been really wanting to take the girls to see the newest princess movie in theaters.  Tangled (the story of Rapunzel) came out a few months ago and we have just had so much going on that I haven't been able to make it to the movies with them.  So yesterday was the day!!  I looked up the movie times and they happened to be playing at 6:30pm, which was perfect because it wasn't too late.  Calli requested to wear pjs and so I put her and Serena in the Minnie Mouse sweats we had just purchased at The Disney Store earlier ($5 on clearance!!) and matchy shirts (opposite colors).  I wanted them to be comfortable and warm and of course they looked cute too ;).

We left a little early and I was thinking since this movie has been out awhile it would not be very crowded.  Well, I could not have been more wrong as I think the show was sold out!!  The theater close to our house does assigned seating when you buy your tickets (I am not sure if this is something that is happening in all theaters or just this one but I REALLY don't like it).  Since Serena is two I do not have to buy her a ticket, but thanks to the dumb assigned seating she won't be guaranteed a seat.  I am fairly certain that the nice ticket lady purpusely did not seat anyone next to us because not long after we sat down a family of four came in having the seats almost next to us, skipping the one.  I really don't think there would be any other explanation for that seat randomly being skipped so that was very nice of her.  I wouldn't have minded holding Serena and I was thinking she would end up in my lap anyway, but she actually sat in her own seat the whole time and felt like a big girl I think.

I was originally going to get a popcorn for us all to share and I had smuggled in some juice boxes and lollipops for the girls.  But upon getting up to the concessions counter and seeing the child options for popcorn, a drink and a bag of teddy grahams, I thought "how often do I get to take my girls to the movies?!"  Not very much.  I decided to splurge a little and bought each of them their own little popcorn meal and a small popcorn for myself.  I can never resist buying popcorn at the movies, especially when you add your own hot butter...as much of it as you want!!  We go to the movies maybe once or twice a year so it is a real treat and I always think, why not just go all out?  If we went every weekend, it would be much different, but we don't so each time we do go it is a treat.

The movie was really, really cute!!  The baby Rapunzel reminded me of Serena, with her chubby little cheeks and long blonde hair.  The girls really liked it and I did too.  We will definitely be adding it to our DVD collection when it comes out.  And Calli is now even saying she wants a Rapunzel birthday party.  I think it's a little soon to be discussing a June birthday, but we shall see!

And after the movie I made a spontaneous decision to take the girls next door for some Coldstone ice cream.  Yes, it was about 40 degrees outside, but it was 8:30 at night and the only treat place open that late.  We had fun eating our desserts before heading for home.  I had soooo much fun just my daughters and me and I would love to do things like that more often.  This quality time with my kids was something I had made a resolution about and I am sticking to it!!  I didn't realize how difficult it would be to spend one on one time with each kid when you have three.  With one, it is simple.  Even with two, each parent can trade off spending time with each kid, but three is a challenge.  Luckily Jameson is still young so I am not to the point where I can take him out for "dates" yet, but I can't wait for that!!  I will love taking my little son to a movie or wherever he wants to go.

(I couldn't decide which photo I liked best, so I just posted them all!)

Jameson

This little boy has been my subject for a lot of pictures.  He is loving the camera lately and whenever you point it at him he immediate says "cheeeeeeeeeeeeese".  It's adorable.

Sunday Fun

Two Sundays ago we woke up and decided to go to Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast.  One thing San Antonio really lacks are great donut places (and just breakfast in general) and while I don't love Krispy Kreme, they have to do in a pinch.  Plus it is fun to go and eat there and when the Hot N Ready sign is on you all get a free donut.  So we walked in and each got a hot glazed donut for free!  Some of us opted to purchase second donuts (and some chocolate milk and coffee).  I had taken my Sunday paper from home and spread it out to peruse while the kids amused themselves.  Now, we had gone out for the day with the assumption that Krispy Kreme would be our only stop and then we would head home, but plans changed despite the fact that I hadn't showered.  I know it's not that gross if you bathe on a regular basis, but I hate leaving the house for an extended period of time without showering for the day.  We were pretty far from home and Richard mentioned a few places that maybe we should check out nearby.  We ended up at Target first because that was the only place open that early.  Yes, despite the fact that it was 9am stores here do not open until 10am on Saturdays.  Best Buy was our next stop to look at cameras.  The sales associate was very helpful with my questions so I left knowing which camera I wanted to buy for my birthday when the time came.  We headed to Outdoor World after that, which is not exactly up my alley, but it's this huge store of hunting and fishing and outdoor sports.  We spent a little while in there before deciding that since it was noon we should probably eat lunch.  So it was off to Willie's Grill for some yummy hamburgers (a free birthday burger for me!!) and letting the kids play in the sandbox there.  Poor Jameson was still a little under the weather so by this time he wasn't having the best time.  I didn't realize exactly how miserable he was until he was 100% better and back to his normal, crazy, goofy self.

So that was our day.  Donuts, Target, cameras, Outdoor World and lunch, all before showering for the day.  But it was fun!!

The Many Faces of Serena

My sweet second born makes the cutest faces!!  Here is just a sampling of the looks she often shoots us on a day to day basis.

Happy Birthday to ME!

I turned 26 last Friday.  I miss being 25!!  I am trying to embrace getting older, but it is hard.  I fear 30, but luckily I have four years to prepare myself.  I keep reminding myself that Richard will always be older than me and since he turns 29 this year, 30 isn't too far off for him.  Now I feel a little better.

I always have high expectations for my birthday and they never pan out.  I was thinking that it's this house that is the curse.  Ever since we have moved in four years ago I haven't had a great birthday!!  The first year we moved the day before my birthday and I did some very heavy lifting.  I woke up on my special day to find myself sore beyond measure and with a new cold.  Happy Birthday to me!!   The next two years I was pregnant, which doesn't mean they were terrible birthdays, but you're not your best when you're pregnant so automatically your day isn't all it could be.  Last year I got sick in the late afternoon, feeling extremely nausious and having to go take a nap!  We were supposed to go out to dinner, but I felt too terrible so we saved the celebration for another day.

So finally this year I thought would be my year.  It didn't start out the best because I overslept!!  I never oversleep - no, really!  I have this annoying internal alarm clock that will wake me up at whatever time I need, even if it's 4:00 in the morning.  However, on Friday that alarm clock failed me, as did my backup alarm clocks I call my kids.  I opened my eyes feeling that panicky feeling you get when you know right away you overslept and saw it was 7:08am.  We leave the house at 7:15am every day to get Calli to school!!  I threw my glasses on and ran out my bedroom door.  When the girls came downstairs seconds later Calli blurted out "Happy Birthday Mommy!  We let you sleep til 7!!"  Thanks girls, but couldn't you have done that tomorrow?!  They quickly ate and I had her lunch packed, hair brushed and everyone dressed and out the door by 7:20am.  Phew!!  What a way to start your birthday.  I hate being rushed in the morning because then I spend the whole day feeling rushed, whether I actually am or not.  So I tried to slow myself down a little bit and took a nice, relaxing shower before heading off to yoga.  After yoga I met some friends for breakfast at IHOP, where the day didn't really improve.  The rude manager would not take my coupon for my free birthday meal because the email said it had been viewed too many times, despite the fact that it was the first time I had printed it and tried to use it.  Yes IHOP, you are so upscale and classy that God forbid, you give someone a free $7 meal on her birthday despite her coupon printing out funny.

When Richard got home from work I got to finally open all my cards and presents, which was super exciting!!  I decided to wait this year to open everything at once and it was like Christmas all over again!!  I had very thoughtful cards and gifts from nearly everyone in my life.  Even my sisters surprised me by getting me a new PINK iPod!!  I also got some monetary gifts that I put toward the purchase of my NEW CAMERA.  A Nikon 3100 and I love it.  The pictures are above and beyond what my point and shoot does.  And the best thing about it is that it is made for someone like me who knows nothing about cameras.  Even if all you do is put it in Auto you will get amazing photos.  I hope to be able to read the manual and learn some tricks too, but for now it is all I can ask for!  We got it at Best Buy that day and I love it.

We went to Red Robin for dinner for my birthday burger and Calli requested that the waiters sing me happy birthday.  Thanks Calli!!  We came home for my traditional Grasshopper Pie from Baskin Robbins to end the night.  I had a pretty good birthday overall and even continued the celebration the next night by going to Austin with a friend!  We had a blast on 6th street, but I will save that story for later when I get the photos.

My iDevice is your iDevice

Richard and I were lucky enough to be able to buy some Apple products for each other for Christmas: he got me an iPhone and I gave him an iPad.  We are glued to them all the time, except when these little thieves get their hands on them!!  A phrase you will often hear come out of Serena's mouth is "I play Angry Birdies?"  Angry Birds is a game on these devices and she loves to play it.  So unfortunately Richard and I don't get to enjoy our new toys as much as we would like with these little ones lurking!!

New Years Resolutions

I am not sure that I have ever made resolutions for the new year in my life.  I'm just not the kind of person that sits down to think about the things I hate about myself and want to change.  And I look around and watch others make resolutions that last maybe a month.  Do any of us actually follow through, until the next new year?  Why bother, right?!

Well this year I have decided to make a few.  I know I'm a little late to the game and it's already a week into January, but I think you should be able to have the whole first month to be able to make resolutions.  So here are mine:

1.  Spend more time with my kids.  I want more one on one time with each of them and more time spent as a family doing things rather than just sitting at home.  I want to spend more time playing with them.  I am not a "play Mom".  I am a do-the-dishes-fold-the-laundry-hold-on-I-gotta-check-my-facebook-time-to-make-lunch/dinner/breakfast/snack-do-you-need-a-timeout kinda Mom.  I can try harder and I can find the time to spend playing with my kids on the living room floor.  Or reading books together, playing games, even watching TV, as long as it's together.

2.  More hugs, less yelling.

2.  Be more positive.  I spend a lot of time in the negative.  My glass is usually half empty.  I make excuses.  I say that if others were nicer, if the weather was better, if the scenery was prettier, if my family was closeby.  I need to accept the place I am at in my life and allow myself to try and enjoy it despite my surroundings.  I want my kids to remember my happiness, not my bad attitude.  Life will never be perfect and I will never have every single thing that I want so why not make the best of what I do have, which is a wonderful family, healthy kids, supportive parents, good friends, a roof over my head in times of economic downturn and endless possibilities stretched before me.

3.  RUN.  I have beeing slacking so much on this front.  I have not run in nearly a month!!  I read that that is pretty typical of runners over the holidays though so it's much to my relief that I'm normal.  I recently sat down to read my last two issues of Runner's World magazine and it seemed nearly every article spoke to me in some way, trying to inspire me to just go for it again.  It's always hard to get back into the swing of things and I am sure my endurance has suffered, but if I make it a priority then I can do it.

4.  BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.  This is one of my favorite quotes.  I can apply it not only to myself and my life, but to helping others.  If I want change in my life, go out and get it and work for it.  Nothing comes for free and nothing is easy and honestly, if it is then it's probably not the right path.  Lord knows I want change in my own life and I will work my damndest to get it.  Helping others is also something I feel a strong pull toward in my life.  It can be something as simple as holding a door open for someone in need or donating food to feed the hungry.  This desire has turned me toward wanting those careers in life that won't pay much, but will be rewarding in the ways that truly matter.

5.  My last goal for this year is GET BACK TO SCHOOL.  It is my turn to get into the college classroom and learn.  I want to get my higher education and go out and do something more in this world.  I am ready to dedicate myself to school, but of course it's something that takes more than just yearning: it takes time and money and hopefully we can find a good combination of both during this year to enable me to pursue this resolution.

Those are my resolutions: what are yours?

Why I hate allergies

I am miserable.  From head to toe, I AM MISERABLE.  I kind of forgot just how bad allergies feel because it has been a whole year.  And I might have thought "maybe last year was a fluke and I'll be fine this year".

Well folks, I am here to tell you that it is not a fluke.  Once you develop allergies, good luck getting rid of them.  And don't come here because you WILL get allergies and you will suffer for the rest of your days.  Itchy eyes, runny and stuffy nose, general aches and pains and just tiredness are a few fun things that come with this.  It doesn't really matter that the weather has been dreadfully warm this winter; the calendar says it's the season for sickness so the cedar comes out to play.  Imagine waking up with your worst cold ever every morning, but instead of knowing that it will go away in a few days and you will be back to normal, you have to endure three months of it.  I'm pretty much a ball of sunshine to be around right now.  And it doesn't help that Jameson has come down with something and has been difficult for the last two days.  Aside from the love of my family, I can find no redeeming qualities in life right now.  I'm sick, I'm bored most days, I'm hot and I'm just generally unfriendly because the rest of this population is so why not join right in.

I'm itching for some change.  I know the good Lord has big plans for me and I'm just waiting to find out what those are.  One of the things I constantly need is patience and that is being tested big time right now.  I need patience with everything in my life from my kids, to the move, to myself.  I know the best way to acquire patience is to practice it, but that is easier said than done.

Yes I know, it's another downer blog from the perennially negative mom of the year.  I can barely focus on the computer screen because my eyes are so heavy from itchiness and my nose is redder than Rudolph's from all the blowing of it I've been doing.  I just feel like a total mess, so I do think I have earned a pass to complain a little.

Sometimes life is just not fair.  And no I don't want to deal with it.  Now excuse me while I go and get my cranky son up from the nap he is refusing to take.  It should be another fun filled afternoon of whining, crying, and endless holding.  I promise a more positive attitude in my next blog!!  For now, I just needed an outlet for my frustration and I need someone to say "I get it because I am going through it too".  This just confirms what I have always believed: moms should not be allowed to get sick or have allergies.  IT'S JUST NOT FAIR.
